Service Description: The Plant Center point feature class is used to store the center point locations of living plant specimens, as well as, the assocated attribute information required to produce living collection maps. This feature class is not designed to replace an existing plant records system, but instead should be linked to one via the Plant Center ID field. This field should be populated with a concatonation of the Accession Number and Qualifier fields, thus producing a unique ID for each specimen. This feature class can be used to create a basic plant records system for new or previously uncataloged collections if desired. Each point should be classified as Individual or Mass Planting using the Plant Center Type field. The Individual classification should be used for individual, stand-alone specimens, and the Mass Planting classification should be used to identify a species that is part of a group of plants growing together that may be too complex or dynamic to map as individuals. Each point classified as a Mass Planting should have a corresponding polygon in the Mass Planting feature class that defines the boundary of the group of plants. This polygon may have one or many species inside of it. Each one of these species should be indentified by a seperate point the Plant Center feature class that is classified as a Mass Planting in the Plant Center Type field.
